Homestay Program

For Students

The homestay experience is an important part of the North Okanagan-Shuswap International Student Program.  Our goal is to arrange a friendly Canadian family for you to live with during your stay in our area. We carefully screen families to find safe, comfortable and happy home environments where you will enjoy 3 meals every day and a furnished bedroom. All homestay families must go through our rigourous screening process, which includes personal interviews, a home inspection, and reference checks.

For Families

The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District is currently looking for families in the Armstrong, Enderby, Salmon Arm and Sicamous areas interested in welcoming an international student to their home.  Families will receive $850 per month to cover room, board, transportation and other costs.

Students come to experience the BC education system, immerse themselves in Canadian culture, and improve their English skills.  Having an international student in your home can be fun and rewarding.  Successful homestays take time, patience and a willingness to share life experiences. This a fantastic learning opportunity for any family as there are many differences – both cultural and personal – among international students and homestay families.

Families must fill out an application and complete a criminal record check for all individuals over 19 living in the home. Homestay applications will only be approved after a home visit from a district home-stay representative occurs . Click here to go to our Online Homestay Application Site.

We want our homestay families to welcome the student as a new member of the family.  Each student you host is a new personality for you to get to know and enjoy.  Some students may be outgoing and independent.  Others may participate more actively in your family life.  Whatever the case, treat your student as you would one of the family, keep the lines of communication open and most importantly, be yourself and have fun!

When choosing our host families we look for:

  • safe, comfortable homes
  • a private bedroom with a window, door, closet, bed, dresser and a desk for studying
  • close proximity to the school bus or walking distance to schools
  • active families willing to share our Canadian culture and their family life
  • ability to provide healthy well-balanced meals and snacks
  • willingness to provide emotional support in a caring environment
  • ability to provide transportation
  • computer and wireless access
